Many SDR transceivers have a tuning range that runs from 70MHz all the way up to 6GHz. This gives technicians more than enough space to run sophisticated data communications regardless of how much local traffic is in the area around them. Security researchers who need to regularly scan a wide swath of the electromagnetic spectrum will find this particularly useful since that slice contains almost every channel used by high-speed data transmissions.

Sensors and other gear that needs to periodically pass packets back and forth between a host could be outfitted with one of these small modules. Makers who work in these kinds of ad hoc labs are usually more than comfortable with doing this kind of work. Depending on the types of circuits involved, this might not even require any soldering.
